What is a Bounce Rate?

Understand failed deliveries and what to do when bounces increase.

Bounce rate is the proportion of attempted messages that could not be delivered. Check how your sequencer defines the denominator before comparing reports.

A bounce is not always an invalid recipient. The exact message can point to a bad address, a temporary problem, authentication or a sending restriction.

  • Invalid or nonexistent recipient: remove the address and keep it suppressed from future outreach.
  • Temporary problem: follow the sending tool's retry behaviour. Do not repeatedly resend by hand.
  • Authentication, policy or sending-account restriction: pause the affected campaign and share the full error with support. Re-verifying the lead list alone may not fix it.

Before resuming

Verify the remaining unsent leads, remove duplicates and invalid addresses, and keep catch-all or uncertain results separate until reviewed. Keep the sequencer's bounce protection and automatic campaign pause enabled.

Verification reduces risk; it does not guarantee zero bounces. Older checks can become outdated, and some delivery failures arrive later than the original send.

If bounces suddenly rise, record the campaign, date range, affected domains and exact error messages. Contact support if the cause is unclear. There is no universal bounce percentage that guarantees safe sending, and a tool's auto-pause threshold is not a safe target.
